The Unit of Study will explore a range of alternative approaches to some of the most famous works of art in the Western tradition, including works by Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Titian. Topics to be investigated include: problems of definition in High Renaissance and Mannerist art; Rome under Julius II and the creation of an imperial capital; Venetian visual poesie; art and dynastic display in Medicean Florence; civic ritual and public space; eroticism and mythology at princely courts; portraiture and gender.
This unit is designed to promote students knowledge and appreciation of the major artists, monuments and critical issues raised by the study of Italian High Renaissance art. It will introduce a variety of interpretative approaches, and foster students acquisition and elaboration of essential skills for the discipline, such as visual and spatial analysis. These skills are taught by direct example in lectures and hands-on training in tutorial discussions.
By the conclusion of this Unit of Study, students will demonstrate:
an understanding of the major artists, monuments and critical issues relevant to the study of High Renaissance art
an understanding of the varying interpretative approaches which have been brought to bear upon the art of this period, and of the strengths and limitations of these differing methodologies
the ability to use visual and spatial analysis of specific works of art and architecture in the service of a critical argument
the ability to evaluate differing interpretations of works of art and to make their own critical judgements on the arguments advanced
