Tutorials will include visits to significant exhibitions including the Biennale of Sydney. Students are encouraged to work with contemporary museum holdings.
This unit is available as a designated 'Advanced' unit to students enrolled in the BA (Advanced) degree program.
This Unit of Study will:
--provide students with a body of knowledge of contemporary international art practice and debates, as well as its historical and social contexts;
--teach students how to apply theoretical methods in art history through practical analyses of conctrete artworks, seen in situ in weekly exhibition visits;
--enable students to think imaginatively about the visual arts and crafts, building skills by working with a combination of original objects and reproductions;
--enhance studentsÂ’ abilities to communicate in written and oral English ideas that concern visual materials and relevant contextual information through tutorial discussions, exhibition reviews and essay assignments.
Students will learn to speak and to write more effectively and persuasively about visual materials (knowing how to account for their decisions and to think creatively). Students will gain the critical skills necessary for analysing and evaluating contemporary art, criticism and curatorial practices. Tutorials are therefore conducted in museums and galleries, including the Biennale of Sydney. Course assessment provides options for the in situ discussion of artworks, art criticism and curatorial design as well as essay writing. Students are also encouraged to work with contemporary museums holdings.
