This course introduces students to a number of key areas in sociolinguistics including language dialects and variations in phonology, syntax and semantics, pidgins and creoles, discourse analysis, register, the relationship between sociolinguistics and second language acquisition (SLA), interlanguage pragmatics, language attitudes, language policies and language planning, language and teaching. Members of the class will undertake empirical research.
